"Like the Moon, You Shone" by Rachael Williamson

"A Lost Battle" by Rachael Williamson

Like the moon, you shone so radiantly—

A soft, steady glow in my darkest nights.

You were quiet strength, calm wisdom,

A presence I thought would always be.

Then you disappeared into the blues,

Like a star slipping beneath the ocean,

Like dusk swallowing the light

Before I could catch one more glimpse of you.

I never thought I'd lose you so soon.

You fought—

With a quiet courage that didn’t beg for praise,

But still,

Life was a battle too heavy to bear.

I wish you’d held on a little longer,

Just a heartbeat more, a whisper more—

Enough for me to hold your hand,

To tell you I love you,

To say goodbye without choking on the word.

But you slipped away, Granddad,

Leaving behind stories unfinished,

A chair too still,

And a heart learning to live with the echo of you.
