"King Covid" by Rachael Williamson

"King Covid" by Rachael Williamson

Through years

All we knew were fears

Of pause, entrapment and lockdown

Freedom, were we conferred to live carefree

Until you came recently

With fever, cough and flu

Which you shared

From person to person

Airborne as a plague

Did you make yourself king

King of Viruses

Whose sceptre frees not its captives

King Covid

Enthroned in ‘19

Long enough did you reign

On throne of continents

At your feet did rulers bow

Upon your name were streets made desolate

Schools shut down

Markets curfewed

Work stopped

In your reign were counted

Deaths upon deaths

Overcrowded hospitals

Hunger, crime

Lockdown of earth, land and sea

The world was paused, O King

King Covid, enthroned in 2019

King of Viruses

As dethroned were past kings

Ebola and Influenza

So have you been

For our freedom

Upon your dethronement

Did we chant:

“Freedom at last"

For your memories

To ashes have we burned

And your urn

Into history cast
